Simmering beneath the earth’s crust in America’s most famous national park, devastation waits to be unleashed in an apocalyptic supervolcano. It’s not a matter of if it erupts, but when………………

It is the year 2020, and the world faces catastrophe, not from nuclear war but a deadlier threat from within. The volcano lurking under Yellowstone Park finally erupts, and the effects threaten not only the US, but the whole world. This two-part drama is not pure fiction but recreates the likely outcome not if but when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts. It follows vulcanologist Rick Lieberman (Michael Riley) and reporter Maggie Chin (Jane McLean) as early rumblings cause nationwide panic. Government attempts to downplay the risk are blown away as the first super-eruption in 74,000 years devastates the US and causes an ash cloud that shrouds the world, causing a ‘volcanic winter’.

The science behind the drama is real, as explained in a follow-up documentary, Supervolcano: The Truth About Yellowstone, on PBS America here in the UK. The hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone are the scenic effects of a bubble of magma that causes the land to swell and sink by up to 20 metres. It is only a matter of time before disaster strikes.
